Seattle is as quiet and polite as memory dictates. I get stuck, though, trying to imagine myself back here. There's an uneasy truce in this city of the future: between digi-moguls and homeless encampments, spotless sidewalks and hulking piles of industrial metal. Most of all, the sense that no one can or should leave this place, for what would they find but the miseries of true metropolises?

I'm reading Susan Sontag's essays again. And puzzling through the disgust and admiration I feel for Hong Sang Soo's films. Oh, and enjoying the delicious cucumbers, tomatoes, and Asian pears my parents have grown out back... and the coffee!

Nora Ephron has amazing comic timing:

"My father by then was in the early stages of forgetting things, but one thing he never forgot was a phone number, and in his later years, he made at least a hundred phone calls a day, all of them brief. Forgive DV for its unfaithfulness, friends! Daily posting has been delayed by the Russian mini-comic, which has been delayed by small amounts of heartbreak and large amounts of writing in other genres. DV is also struggling against its lack of talent for the visual arts, sadly proportional to its love of the same!

DV promises, for the time being, to post in words at the very least.

Today, the inspiration of Joseph Brodsky writing about his idol W.H. Auden:

"If a poet has any obligation toward society, it is to write well. Being in the minority, he has no other choice. Failing this duty, he sinks into oblivion. Society, on the other hand, has no obligation toward the poet. A majority by definition, society thinks of itself as having other options than reading verses, no matter how well written. Its failure to do so results in its sinking to that level of locution at which society falls easy prey to a demagogue or a tyrant. This is society's own equivalent of oblivion; a tyrant, of course, may try to save his subjects from it by some spectacular bloodbath."

Mr. Brodsky, marry me!
